Sports, from baseball to fitness sports, soccer to hockey, from kids sports to youth footbal and soccer to high school sports, college sports and professional sports. Puppies, kitty cats and our kids do it instinctively: People are born to play sports! And this website is dedicated to all sports and the people who play sports, watch sports, sports professionals and toddlers just getting started!
Sports are defined as organized, competitive, and skillful (we hope) physical activity requiring commitment and fair play (Again, we hope!). Sports are governed by a set of rules or customs. In a sport the main factors are the physical capabilities and skills of the competitor when determining the outcome (winning or losing). The physical activity involves the movement of people, animals and/or an assortment of objects such as balls and machines. And contrary to what some may think, games such as card games and board games, though these could be called mind sports and some are recognized as Olympic sports, require only mental skills and little physical. Non-competitive activities such as jogging and rock-climbing, are usually classified as recreations, but sometimes considered sports as well.
Scoring goals or crossing a line first often define the result of a sport. The degree of skill in some sports such as diving, dressage and figure skating is judged according to well-defined criteria on a point system. This is in contrast to other judged activities, which are more subjective, such as beauty pageants and body-building shows, where skill does not have to be shown and the criteria are not as well defined.
Accurate records are kept and updated for most of the most popular sports, while failures and accomplishments are widely announced in sport news and record books and trivia books. Sports are most often played just for fun or for exercise to stay in shape or good physical condition. However, professional sports are a major source of entertainment. (As are kids soccer matches:)
Although they do not always succeed, sports participants are expected to display good sportsmanship, and observe standards of conduct and respect for of opponents and officials. And the loser, ideally, is expected to graciously congratulate the winner.
